ITC Hearing Aids: A Discreet, Custom Fit for Everyday Hearing
In-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids are moulded to the exact shape of your ear, sitting mostly out of sight while giving you the controls and battery life a smaller device can't. Here's everything to know before you choose one.
What is an ITC hearing aid?
ITC stands for In-The-Canal. It's a custom-shell hearing aid, built from an impression of your own ear, that fills the bowl-shaped part of the outer ear (the concha) and extends a short way into the ear canal.
Because every shell is moulded individually, an ITC device sits securely without an ear hook or tube, and all of its electronics — microphone, amplifier, receiver, and battery — are housed inside that one custom piece. It's the mid-point of the custom hearing aid family: bigger and easier to handle than a CIC hearing aid or IIC hearing aid, yet noticeably smaller and less visible than an ITE hearing aid.
How an ITC hearing aid works
An audiologist takes a silicone impression of your ear canal and concha. That impression is sent to a lab, which builds a hard acrylic or soft-shell case shaped to fit your ear precisely. The finished shell houses a directional microphone, a digital sound processor, an amplifier, a receiver (speaker), and a battery — typically a size 13 or 312 cell, or a rechargeable pack on newer models.
Because the microphone sits closer to the ear canal opening than in a behind-the-ear device, sound reaches the eardrum with less distortion, and many wearers find the fit more natural for picking up speech in conversation.
Advantages and trade-offs
What people like
- Discreet — mostly hidden within the ear's natural shape
- Room for a physical volume or programme button
- Larger battery than CIC/IIC, so it typically lasts longer between changes
- Easier to insert, remove, and clean than smaller custom styles
- No tubing or wire to catch on glasses, masks, or headwear
Worth knowing
- More visible than a CIC or IIC hearing aid
- Not usually recommended for severe-to-profound hearing loss
- Custom shell means a 1–2 week fabrication turnaround
- Occlusion (a "plugged ear" feeling) is possible until fine-tuned
- Feedback whistling if the seal wears loose over time
ITC vs other hearing aid styles
Choosing between custom and behind-the-ear styles usually comes down to hearing loss level, dexterity, and how visible you want the device to be. Here's how ITC compares with the other types of hearing aids we fit at Audiotone Hearing Clinics.
| Style | Relative size | Typical hearing loss | Visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| BTE hearing aids | Largest | Mild to profound | High |
| RIE hearing aids | Large | Mild to severe | Moderate |
| Micro-RIE hearing aids | Medium | Mild to moderately severe | Moderate–low |
| ITE hearing aids | Medium | Mild to severe | Moderate |
| ITC hearing aids | Small–medium | Mild to moderately severe | Low |
| CIC hearing aids | Small | Mild to moderate | Very low |
| IIC hearing aids | Smallest | Mild to moderate | Practically invisible |
Is an ITC hearing aid right for you?
ITC devices tend to suit adults who:
- Have mild to moderately severe hearing loss confirmed by an audiologist's assessment
- Want a hearing aid that's hard to spot but still easy to handle day to day
- Prefer a manual button for volume or programme changes over a phone app alone
- Have had trouble with the smaller battery or grip of a CIC or IIC device
- Wear glasses, masks, or head coverings regularly and want to avoid ear-hook tubing
If you're not sure which category your hearing falls into, the safest first step is a proper diagnostic hearing test rather than guessing from symptoms alone.

Frequently asked questions
What does ITC stand for in hearing aids?
ITC stands for In-The-Canal. It's a custom-moulded hearing aid that fills the bowl of the outer ear and extends partway into the ear canal, sitting between the larger ITE style and the smaller CIC and IIC styles.
Who is a good candidate for ITC hearing aids?
Adults with mild to moderately severe hearing loss who want a discreet device but also need a control button, a larger battery, or the dexterity ease of a slightly bigger custom shell than a CIC or IIC hearing aid.
How long do ITC hearing aids last?
With regular cleaning and annual servicing, ITC hearing aids typically last 4 to 6 years before the shell or components need replacement or an upgrade.
Are ITC hearing aids visible when worn?
They're only mildly visible from the front and sit largely within the natural contours of the outer ear — far less noticeable than a BTE hearing aid.
What is the price of ITC hearing aids in Hyderabad?
Pricing depends on the brand, chip technology, and number of channels. We fit ITC devices from ReSound, Signia, Phonak, Starkey, and Widex — book a hearing test for a personalised quote.
